CELEBRATE A NEW GENERATION OF POETS ON JUNE 11

The winners of the Kenneth G. Mills Poetry Prize will be announced on June 11, 2017, at the Jeanne Lamon Hall of Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre for Faith, Justice and the Arts, 427 Bloor Street West, Toronto. During this event, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the three winning students from Toronto high schools, colleges, and universities will each receive a prize of $1,000 and have the opportunity to read their poems aloud. Runners-up will also read, and there will be a special guest poetry recitation. Tickets will be available at the door: adults $10, students $5.

In this inaugural year of the Kenneth G. Mills Poetry Prize, contestants were invited to write about their urban experience of Toronto – its diversity, its challenges, its culture, its history, or its meaning in their lives. The judges, headed up by retired Toronto high school teacher and published poet Robert McAlpine, were looking for originality and freshness of ideas, perspectives, or presentation.

Canadian philosopher Dr. Kenneth G. Mills was an exponent of the oral tradition who often surprised listeners by speaking in spontaneous poetry. Many of his poems were set to music and performed by the Star-Scape Singers.
